Michael ‘Swish’ Robinson had it all: fame, fortune, fans, a burgeoning hip hop career. Swish used his success in the ring and social media savvy as launching platforms for his brand. He had endorsement deals, his own rum distillery (Swish Rum: Get Swish!) and a fleet of expensive Italian sports cars. Bitten early on in the crisis, Swish noticed that the plague had deadened his senses, allowing him to take greater punishment during his matches and still come out on top. With a world championship belt in his sights, he refused to seek treatment. The rest is history. Swish turned full zombie on the night of his fight in Las Vegas, biting fight fans as he made his entrance to the ring. In minutes, he had infected hundreds, his long gestating, late stage illness turning people in seconds.
Las Vegas saw thousands of tourists from across the world every day. Although ‘Swish’ appears to have been one of the contagion vectors, who knows how many others at the event were also carriers in earlier stages of the infection? Some of those bitten or scratched, thinking they were safe, almost certainly returned home in the days after the event, bringing the disease with them to pass on to their families and friends across the world.
