An Amazon Echo in Hamburg started its own party on a recent Saturday morning, even though its owner was not home and hadn't activated Alexa.


The loud music woke neighbors who called police. When the police arrived they had to break down the front door to turn off Alexa.


The police changed the door lock, and the owner only found out when he arrived home and his key didn't work.


 

Amazon's smart assistant Alexa is supposed to make life easier, but one German owner recently discovered it doesn't always quite work out that way.

When Oliver Haberstroh returned to his apartment near Hamburg early one Saturday morning he found his key no longer fit the door lock.

It turned out Haberstroh's Alexa-enabled Amazon Echo, had begun playing incredibly loud music at 1.50am -- completely of its own accord.

The residents then called the police who broke open the apartment door to find the Amazon Echo that had turned up its volume all by itself.

Police unplugged the device and, as they left, put a new lock on the door.

Haberstroh had to pick up the new key at the police station, as well as accept a hefty bill for the locksmith.

In a Facebook post on Amazon Germany's page on November 5, Haberstroh said he did not remotely activate Alexa.

"I was perfectly happy with your service and Alexa," wrote Haberstroh. "However, the relationship between Alexa and me has taken a U-turn since Friday night. You could say ‘it's complicated' … we have to go our separate ways."




So far the post has received more than 50,000 likes and comments.

One theory from a customer service staff member Haberstroh spoke to said Alexa may have picked up noises from the street below. However, Haberstroh, who lives on the sixth floor, said all his windows were closed at the time. 

Haberstroh jokingly asked his Alexa whether it would at least cover the costs. It responded: "I have not found an answer to the question."
