In the midst of worldwide tribulations which rocked the continents and turned skies blood red, Flash Gordon, quarterback with the New York Jets, vanished. Abducted alongside journalist Dale Arden by the eccentric scientist Hans Zarkov, Flash was an unwilling passenger on Zarkov's untested space ship.

Awakening on the distance planet of Mongo, Flash and his companions were taken prisoner and brought before the planet's ruler: the psychotic Ming the Merciless. Sentenced to death after defying Ming, Flash escaped his fate and convinced those of Arboria and Prince Vultan's hawkmen to rebel and take up arms against the despot's rule.

Brave, honorable and more than a little reckless, Flash's good nature and kind heart convinces even the most cynical and downbeat to hold on and strive for a brighter future when all hope seems lost. Recognized by all that encounter him, even Ming himself, as a true hero, Flash is the equal of any challenge that he comes across in the pursuit of money and power.
