The promise of better gameplay and a new dazzling world to get lost in has thousands of gamers wishing they had the expansion in their computers. One of the expansion's most controversial features is the inclusion of Death Knights as a Hero Class. The Death Knights in the expansion will be those that used to be allied with the Lich King. This is why they were formerly known as the Champions of the Lich King. Unlike the first Death Knights who were merely spirits of warlocks put into the bodies of dead Knights of Stormwind, the their Death Knights were former paladins who lost their faith and turned back from the light.

The first of these paladins, and perhaps the most powerful was Prince Arthas himself. In his quest to conquer and defeat the Scourge, Prince Arthas tried to obtain the powerful blade, Frostmourne. He was not aware that the blade was a lure by the Lich King himself. Once he possessed it, Prince Arthas' humanity was lost, thus making him a Death Knight. When Prince Arthas finally managed to get to the Frozen Throne, he broke the ice around the Lich King and became one with him. Together, they lured other paladins into Northrend and cultivated their disillusionment and doubt. The paladins that they were able to draw away from the Light became Dark Knights.

The main difference of the Death Knights of old and the Lich King's Death Knights lie in the fact that the latter are already powerful heroes to begin with, and the addition of the dark powers from the Lich King has just made them even more formidable. Added to that is the fact that the new Death Knights are immortal, one of the gifts given to them by the Lich King. These Death Knights can also be brought back from the dead when they die during combat. The Champions of the Lich King may have been defeated before, but now they biding their time, waiting for the Lich King's command to lay waste to Azeroth once again.

This is how the new Death Knights came to be. Today, there are factions existing among the group. There are Death Knights who remain loyal to the Lich King, while others have taken a different path. Hopefully, the history of how Death Knights came to be that I wrote above would give you insights regarding the characters in the new expansion. Until the game is officially released, all we can do for now is cross our fingers and wish it lives up to the hype.
