The self-possessed daughter of an academic, Jane found her life forever changed when she was stranded along with a party of travelers in a remote and unexplored region of Africa. Inexperienced and unused to the jungle environment, she was rescued more than once from certain death by Tarzan and was eventually able to return home to America.

The Lord of the Jungle mistakenly believed Jane's heart belonged to another, but fate eventually reunited the star-crossed lovers. After enduring perilous adventures, the happy couple were married. Though Tarzan at last claimed his birthright as Lord Greystroke, Jane returned with him to Africa to make their home near the ape-man's beloved jungle.

In the years since, having learned much from her husband about bush craft and the art of self-defense, Jane aids Tarzan in his efforts to preserve peace in the jungle and protect those in need. Now an experienced adventurer, she searches for lost cities and, together with Tarzan, guards against humanity's interference in the lives of the great apes and other animals.
